Concept Framework
What is a Bank Reconciliation Statement?
A bank reconciliation statement is a statement prepared to explain the difference between the bank balance shown in the cash book and the balance shown on the bank statement.
Why Differences Occur
Differences may arise because of:
• unpresented cheques
• outstanding lodgements
• bank charges
• direct debits
• errors
CORE RULES
| Item | Treatment |
|---|---|
| Bank Charges | Update cash book |
| Direct Debit | Update cash book |
| Outstanding Lodgement | Reconciliation adjustment |
| Unpresented Cheque | Reconciliation adjustment |
| Bank Error | Reconciliation adjustment |
TRANSACTION LOGIC
The cash book should first be updated for items not yet recorded by the business.
After updating the cash book, a bank reconciliation statement is prepared to explain remaining differences.
Timing differences commonly cause disagreement between records.
Worked Examples
Example 1 — Bank Charges
Bank charges £40 appear on the bank statement but not in the cash book.
Cash Book Entry:
Debit Bank Charges £40
Credit Bank £40
Example 2 — Unpresented Cheque
Cheque issued £500 has not yet been presented to the bank.
Adjustment:
Add £500 in reconciliation statement.
Example 3 — Outstanding Lodgement
Cash deposit £900 entered in cash book but not yet shown on bank statement.
Adjustment:
Subtract £900 in reconciliation statement.
