What is Cost of Sales?
Cost of sales represents the direct cost of goods sold by a business during an accounting period.
It includes:
• opening inventory
• purchases
• direct expenses
• closing inventory adjustments
Why Cost of Sales is Important
Cost of sales helps businesses calculate gross profit accurately.
Higher cost of sales generally reduces gross profit.

TRANSACTION LOGIC
Opening inventory represents goods available at the start of the year.
Purchases increase goods available for sale.
Closing inventory represents unsold goods and must be deducted.
Cost of Sales Formula:
Opening Inventory + Net Purchases + Direct Expenses − Closing Inventory
Worked Examples
Example 1 — Basic Cost of SalesOpening Inventory £4,000
Purchases £12,000
Closing Inventory £3,000
Cost of Sales:
£4,000 + £12,000 − £3,000
= £13,000

Example 3 — Net PurchasesPurchases £20,000
Returns Outwards £1,500
Net Purchases:
£20,000 − £1,500
= £18,500
