Concept Framework
What are Accounting Errors?
Accounting errors occur when transactions are recorded incorrectly or omitted from the accounting records.
Types of Errors
Errors of omission → transaction completely omitted
Errors of commission → incorrect recording
Errors of principle → wrong classification
Compensating errors → errors cancelling each other
Errors of original entry → incorrect amount recorded
Reversal of entries → debit and credit reversed
CORE RULES
| Error Type | Trial Balance Effect |
|---|---|
| Error of Omission | No effect |
| Error of Principle | No effect |
| Reversal of Entries | No effect |
| One-sided Error | Trial Balance disagrees |
| Arithmetic Error | Trial Balance disagrees |
TRANSACTION LOGIC
Some accounting errors do not affect the agreement of the trial balance.
Suspense accounts are used temporarily when the trial balance does not balance.
Correction entries restore the correct accounting treatment.
