Ledger balances are extracted from T-accounts.

Debit balances are entered in the debit column.

Credit balances are entered in the credit column.

The total debit column should equal the total credit column.

Worked Examples

Example 1 — Simple Trial Balance

Cash £5,000 (Debit)
Capital £5,000 (Credit)

Trial Balance Totals:
Debit £5,000
Credit £5,000
 

 
Example 2 — Multiple Balances

Cash £3,000 Dr
Purchases £2,500 Dr
Sales £4,000 Cr
Payables £1,500 Cr

Totals:
Debit = £5,500
Credit = £5,500
 

 
Example 3 — Expense Account

Rent account balance = £700 debit

Trial Balance Entry:
Rent £700 (Debit column)
